Devices

I'll gladly admit that I'm a geek of the old school. I love all my little devices and I love how over the past decade even setting up home networks have become a reason to plan and document everything in detail. More on that in a later post though, this time (and this blog's premiere) will go to the enumeration of all my little devices. Named of course, mostly after different forms of AI that in one way or the other didn't quite performed as intended...

Skynet - Ah, I'm on my 4th generation Skynet now. The first three were Windows machines ranging from an AMD Duron 600Mhz to an AMD Athlon64 2GHz. Today's Skynet is a Powermac from 2005 (yes, they last that long) still going strong. It will most likely be replaced this year - either by an 27" iMac or a big, nice monitor for my next generation Voyager.

Voyager - Currently a MacBook from 2006, this is my true workhorse. It has saved my and my customer's bacon on more than one occasion so I'll make sure it finds a good home when it is replaced by a MacBook Pro (I'm just waiting for Apple to release the next version)

Father - A Mac Mini Core Duo 2Ghz that serves as mail and web server. It also serves my home theater needs through the use of Plex.

Mother - A Mac Mini Server running OS X Server. Will take over the server tasks of Father and more. The name is reused from my very first Mac which was a G4 Mac Mini from 2005. It didn't take me long to be completely hooked and the Mac Mini remains my favourite form factor to this day.

Deep Thought - Decked out Mac Mini Core Duo 2 used for development and testing - both native and virtualized.

Nox - Nokia N800, a toy that's still oddly useful and fun to play with.

Browneee - My ASUS EEE S101 netbook. Another toy used for testing and running the various versions of Ubuntu Linux. Intended as a "coffee table computer".

Related computers in the household are my darling's MacBook Pro, 7of9, and Mac Mini, AMEE.

Cookies to anyone who can spot and identify the origin of the references. Cake to the one who can single out the black sheep....
